The Magazine Rack
- Alternative Press
A very good magazine for finding out about the former 'alternative'
scene. Well written, respectable, and good sections on upcoming releases.
I trust their reviews more than anyone's.
- Axcess
A trashy cybermag. We don't think that computers and fashion mix,
thank you very much. But the occasional article pops up that is worth
while.
-
bOING bOING
One of the few decent cybermags. Their articles are very well written
with a good subject matter. They're a magazine that has managed to cover
decent tech topics without pandering. Plus, they have slammed
Details on occasion, which is ok with me!
- B-Side
Not as good for reviews & what's coming up as Alternative Press,
but they have some great interviews.
- CMJ
The College Music Journal (I think). They were the bible when I was
doing radio at
WVAU. They had the best release information anywhere, playlists from
every college station (almost) in the country, and *tons* of reviews. And
they are a weekly mag! Sadly, most of the good stuff on the site is pay only.
- Games
They're fun, they have neat puzzles and they do april fools jokes.
Their hidden contests are great, and what other magazine does scavenger
hunts? They should do contests on the web.
- Mondo 2000
I like them. They may have the occasional fashion info, and they may
seem like the voice of the drug cyber counterculture, but they look good
and they find interesting topics for their articles. At least they're not
Wired!
- Next Generation
This glossy mag is the sister magazine of the English mag,
Edge. The layout is slick, and they take a tech approach to
the video and computer gaming scene. I was impressed because they did
a review of Myst which said what was already obvious: the game really
isn't anything more than a pretty pseudo-environment with lame puzzles!
They've been sliding a *lot* lately...
- Spy
What can you say about a magazine that likes to pull practical jokes
for a living? Even if it is from New York, I like it anyway. I don't
think you can say anything more about what they cover, it's merely sarcasm
on a global scale. And anyone sarcastic is ok with me.
- 2600
Great technical info on hacking and phreaking makes 2600
a winner on knowledge alone. But their ability to cut through the BS
and talk about things makes them a mag that all other mags should
learn from. Plus, the editor took his name from 1984.
